GEO is the new SEO. Here's the 14-point optimization audit.
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the discipline of making your brand discoverable, citable, and recommended inside the answers that AI assistants generate. By the end of 2026, 30-50% of B2B research will start in an AI assistant. The brands that are cited in those answers will own the awareness layer. The brands that aren't will be invisible.
Here's the 14-point audit we run before designing any GEO strategy.
Discoverability (4 points)
1. Are your major content pages crawled by GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot?
2. Is your sitemap accurate and updated weekly?
3. Are your URLs semantic?
4. Is your domain trusted by major data sources?
Structure (4 points)
5. Does every page have proper schema markup?
6. Is your H1/H2/H3 hierarchy clean?
7. Are key answers in the first 50 words of each page?
8. Are quotable claims isolated as clean sentences?
Authority (3 points)
9. Is your author entity strong?
10. Is your brand cited externally?
11. Are you the original source on any topic?
Topical depth (3 points)
12. Do you have pillar-level depth on your category?
13. Do you answer the "next question" people ask after your topic?
14. Do you have content for every major buyer persona?
How to score it
Each point is 0, 1, or 2.
- 22-28: Strong GEO position. Your brand will appear in generated answers.
- 12-21: Average. You'll appear sometimes. You'll be invisible others.
- 0-11: You are not in the generated answer set. Competitors who fix this in the next 12 months will own the category.
The hard truth about GEO
It is harder to game than SEO ever was. The reward function is closer to "be genuinely useful and well-structured" than to "stuff the right keywords."
This is good news for brands willing to invest in quality content and bad news for brands hoping for a shortcut. The companies that move first will compound for years. The ones that wait will spend the late 2020s wondering why their pipeline disappeared.
